Home for Chanukah
This is turning out to be yet another deeply spiritual Chanukah. I wanted to make another Chanukah video this year using my new camera, but I couldn't find the right piece of music to accompany it. I considered the soundtrack from my all time favorite movie ALIVE. It didn't seem right. Then I tried One Little Candle. Too predictable, a pretty enough song but it wasn't right. Kenny G's Miracles is haunting but didn't seem right.

The right song came to mind. It's not a Chanukah song at all but seems perfect, the only song that seems right--Into the Mystic by Gorge Ivan Morrison (Van Morrison). It's an amazing song about soul mates.

That soul mate could be a spouse, a child, someone left behind, or...G-d. Chanukah is an excellent time to reach out to those Jews who seem lost to Judaism through assimilation, depression, disillusionment, intermarriage, or other reasons, and finally reuniting. Off topic to Chanukah, but Van Morrison is Irish (born in Northern Ireland). This song like so many Irish tunes also has a subtle sadness and longing to return to...someone...a sense of being left behind and hope of being reunited.

Side note--I was really amazed with the candles on my menorahs this year. Normally the traditionally shaped menorah takes on a life of its own, menorah gone wild. The night I made the video all of the candles on both didn't flicker in the least.  The flames are in perfect order, standing at attention almost.  Of course the warm December temps and lack of wind helped.
